Oberlin, Ohio – The Transylvania swimming and diving team completed three days of competition against eight other teams at the Oberlin Invitational, held Thursday through Saturday on the campus of Oberlin College.
The Transylvania women's swimming and diving team took fourth against the nine team field while the Pioneer men's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the Ohio-based event which attracted teams from New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, as well as Kentucky.
The Pioneers turned in top-2 results on Thursday, led by the quartet of Sami Monarch, Logan Thomas, Hannah Tapp, and Mary Grace Thompson, who captured a runner-up finish versus Allegheny in the women's 200 freestyle relay. The Pioneer relay team touched the wall in 1:41.76, just a half second behind winner Allegheny.
Connor Hood led the Transylvania men's team on Thursday, wrapping up a fourth-place finish in the men's 500 freestyle final, finishing in 4:49.60.
Tapp and Monarch showed off their speed yet again on Thursday night in the women's 50 freestyle final; Tapp took third in 25.05 seconds while Monarch finished just .03 seconds behind Tapp for fourth. Jacob Young delivered a fifth-place finish in 22.07 seconds in the men's 50 freestyle.
It was a dominant weekend for Mackie Redford, who won the women's 3-meter dive on Friday with 421.80 points and captured a win in the women's 1-meter dive on Saturday with 418.35 points.
Redford's sterling Friday kicked off another productive showing for the Pioneers, who reeled off a third-place finish in the women's 200 medley relay as Delaney McPherson, Olivia Greinke, Monarch, and Tapp finished in 1:56.75.
Aiden Rock stepped up for the Transylvania men on Friday, capturing third in the men's 400 individual medley, finishing just .02 seconds off of a runner-up finish. McPherson and Tapp made noise again for the Pioneers with a fifth and seventh-place finish respectively in the women's 200 freestyle race.
Hood continued to shine for the Pioneers with a third-place finish in the men's 200 freestyle on Friday, finishing in 1:45.88. Greinke earned a fifth-place finish in the women's 100 breaststroke (1:11.28) and Devon Parker claimed sixth in the men's 100 breaststroke finals (1:01). Monarch added more points to the Transylvania women's swimming and diving team's tally with a third-place finish in the women's 100 backstroke on Friday, finishing in 1:00.68 as part of another photo finish.
McPherson added another top-3 finish for the Pioneers on Saturday with a third-place finish in the grueling women's 1650 freestyle race. Hood punctuated a great week with a third-place showing in the men's 200 backstroke on Saturday, finishing in 1:57.42. Monarch added a fourth-place finish in the women's 100 freestyle (54.26 seconds), and capped off the weekend by teaming with Tapp, McPherson, and Thompson for a runner-up placing in the women's 400 freestyle relay race, coming home in 3:39.50.
The three-day marathon concludes the Pioneers' schedule prior to the holidays. Transylvania will restart competition on Saturday, January 15 at the Sewanee Tigers in Sewanee, Tennessee.
