Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Transylvania women’s tennis team fall to Piedmont in NCAA Tournament First Round

Atlanta, Ga. - The Transylvania women's tennis team had yet another fantastic 2021-22 season, but came up short against the Piedmont University Lady Lions in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament, played at Emory University in Atlanta. The Pioneers were defeated 5-2, in a hard fought matchup with great talent all around.

The outstanding duo of Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton excelled in doubles play as they have all spring, earning a masterful 8-1 win in #1 doubles. Sheila Cetina and Christina Duvall fell in the #2 spot, 8-3, however Transylvania grabbed another win in #2 doubles as Katherine Taylor and Grace Gardner took their match, 8-4.

Unfortunately for the Transy team, things took a turn in singles play as Piedmont took control in the afternoon with four straight singles victories, ending the day. The Pioneers fought hard as matches were close, but were unable to come out victorious, falling 4-0.

The Piedmont Lady Lions will move on to play the defending national champions, Emory, at Emory University. With the 2021-22 season now wrapped up after today for the Pioneers, there is a lot to look back on including winning 15 of their 20 total matches this year, and going undefeated in conference play.

The Pioneers also earned plenty of awards throughout the season, including 7 HCAC player of the week awards throughout the year, an HCAC Player of the Year award (Porsche Robinson), and an HCAC Coach of the Year award (Bill Carey). This year, much like last season, goes down as one of the greatest women's tennis seasons in Transylvania history.

Another memorable campaign goes in the books for Transylvania women's tennis, as they made the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and completed their third straight winning season. The Pioneers aim to continue their HCAC title defense next season, as they have won the previous three HCAC Tournament Championships.

Head coach Bill Carey has taken the Transylvania women's tennis team to a new level with their recent success. The Pioneers look ahead to another great season in the 2022-23 academic year and look to keep improving as a program.
