Men's Tennis suffers narrow loss to Ohio Northern University

For the second day in a row a Transy Men's tennis match came down to the wire, and the Pioneers came up just short against Ohio Northern at Top Seed Tennis Club tonight. The loss moves the Transy record to 4-3.

Ohio Northern started the match strong in doubles. For just the second time in the season the Pioneers lost two of the three matches. Chris Kaufmann and Arjun Gupta served up an 8-4 win at #1 doubles. The teams of Jordan Cordrey and Eli Skaggs (#2) and Jared Wells and Jacob Jiranek (#3) each dropped their matches to put the home team in a 2-1 hole going into the singles competition.

The Pioneers struck back quickly in the singles. Chris Kaufmann finished off a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 singles just minutes before Chase Moreman won 2-6, 6-0, 1-0(8) at #5. Moreman's win gave Transy a 3-2 lead, but it was temporary. Arjun Gupta and Jordan Cordrey dropped close matches at #2 and #6, respectively, and gave the Polar Bears a 4-3 lead with two matches on court.

Alejandro Perez-Canedo was unable to convert in the second set and lost a 6-4, 7-6(3) decision at #3. With the match decided Jacob Jiranek won a tight 7-6(5), 7-5 match at #4 singles to close the competition and make the final score 5-4 for Ohio Northern.

"Today was a challenge for us and credit belongs with Ohio Northern. They were composed in big moments and deserved to win. We will get back to work this week to get ready for two big matches next weekend," said Head Coach Kevin Calhoun.
