Transylvania Women's Soccer Falls to Hanover in HCAC Semifinals, 1-0

HANOVER, Ind. — Transylvania University women's soccer saw its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament run come to an end Wednesday evening, falling to Hanover College 1-0 in the HCAC semifinals at the Hanover Soccer Complex.

A late penalty kick from Hanover's Abby Smith proved to be the difference in a tightly contested postseason matchup that remained scoreless for more than 87 minutes.
Both teams generated opportunities throughout the opening half, with Hanover holding a 6-4 advantage in shots. Transylvania created an early scoring opportunity when Reagan Johansen forced a save from Hanover goalkeeper Kendall Moore in the fourth minute.

Eva Blanke added another shot on goal in the 26th minute, but neither team was able to break through before halftime.

Hanover increased its offensive pressure in the second half, forcing Transylvania goalkeeper Carrie Stevens into several key saves. Stevens turned away five shots over the final 45 minutes to keep the Pioneers within striking distance.

Transylvania continued to create opportunities of its own, with Ginger Mooser, Emersyn Cox and Gracie Carrigan each recording second-half shots on goal.

With the match appearing headed toward overtime, Hanover was awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute. Smith converted the opportunity at 87:18 to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

The Pioneers were unable to find an equalizer in the closing minutes as Hanover secured its place in the HCAC Tournament Championship. Carrigan led Transylvania with three shots, while Blanke added two attempts. Johansen, Mooser and Cox each recorded a shot on goal. Stevens finished with eight saves across 90 minutes, allowing just the penalty-kick goal.
Hanover held a 14-8 advantage in total shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, while earning five corner kicks compared to two for Transylvania.
