FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Powered by a dominant performance at the top of the leaderboard, Transylvania University placed second at the Fernandina Beach Collegiate this week, highlighted by a 1-2 individual finish from freshman
Andy Steed and senior
Tom Buchert.
Steed continued his breakout freshman campaign in emphatic fashion, claiming medalist honors while shooting -12 for the tournament. The rookie fired rounds of 69-65-70 to finish at 204, separating himself from the field with a blistering 7-under 65 in the second round. The 2nd round 65 is the lowest tournament round ever by a Transylvania golfer. Steed made 16 birdies over three rounds and played his final 36 holes in 9-under par, showing composure and confidence well beyond his years. He only had 2 bogeys in the 54 hole event.
Buchert continues to play steady golf, finishing runner-up at 5-under-par (211). The senior posted rounds of 70-72-69, closing with a steady 3-under 69 to secure the Pioneers' 1-2 sweep atop the individual standings. Buchert's consistency throughout the week provided veteran leadership and gave Transylvania a powerful one-two punch.
Behind their leaders, the Pioneers finished at 5-under as a team, just one stroke shy of tournament champion Shenandoah (-6). Transylvania separated itself from the rest of the field, with third-place Swarthmore finishing at 3-under and no other team under par for the event.
The performance marks one of the strongest team showings of the spring for the Pioneers and builds significant momentum heading into the heart of the season.
