LEXINGTON, KY - The Transylvania Pioneers will look to continue their conference dominance this weekend as they compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament, hosted in Indianapolis.
In the midst of a historic run, the Pioneers enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed following a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play and a 10-4 overall record. Transylvania has now secured its sixth consecutive undefeated conference season and will aim to capture a seventh straight HCAC Tournament championship.
"I'm really proud of the consistency this group has shown all season," said head coach Bill Carey. "They've put themselves in a great position, but more importantly, they've continued to raise the standard of what this program expects."
By earning the top seed, the Pioneers receive a first-round bye and will open tournament play in the semifinal round against the winner of the No. 4 Earlham College and No. 5 Anderson University matchup. The semifinal is scheduled for Saturday, with a start time of 11:00 a.m. outdoors or 10:00 a.m. indoors.
The winner will advance to Sunday's HCAC Championship match, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Transylvania's sustained success has been driven by a veteran core that has never experienced a conference loss during their collegiate careers. That experience, paired with depth throughout the lineup, has positioned the Pioneers as the team to beat once again.
Among the standouts this season, junior Maddy Williams has gone undefeated at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles while earning HCAC Player of the Week honors. At the top of the lineup, Paulina Razo-Zapata has also earned Player of the Week recognition while leading the Pioneers at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Assistant coaches Eli Skaggs and Jessica Burton have also played key roles in the program's continued development and success throughout the season.
Lilly Hartman, Maria Hayes, Ellie Held, Paulina Razo and Maddy Williams were selected to HCAC All-Conference First Team honors, while Meredith Cooper was named to the Honorable Mention Team, giving the Pioneers six All-Conference selections. Head Coach Bill Carey was selected as HCAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
With another championship within reach, the Pioneers will look to extend their streak and secure yet another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
