LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a strong opening stretch against some of the best competition in NCAA Division III, the Transylvania University men's golf team moved up two spots to No. 14 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, released by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Pioneers, previously ranked No. 16, received 143 points in the latest national poll. The move comes after three tournaments that have included a top-five finish, an individual championship and numerous rounds under par against nationally ranked competition.
Transylvania opened the season at its own Transylvania Fall Invitational at the University Club of Kentucky's Big Blue Course, finishing fifth in a 17-team field that included five nationally ranked programs.
After rounds of 291 and 296, the Pioneers closed with an 8-under-par 280, climbing four positions on the final day to finish at 867 (+3).
Sophomore Seth Hickerson led the final-round charge with a career-low 67 (-5), carding seven birdies and playing the two nines in 33-34. Hickerson finished the tournament 13th at 3-under par and was named HCAC Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance.
Freshman Carter Denton added a 70 (-2) in the final round, sophomore All-American Andy Steed shot 71 (-1) and junior Ty Ruttinger contributed an even-par 72 to complete the four counting scores in Transylvania's 280.
The Pioneers followed their home event with another major test at the Gate City Invitational at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, where 13 of the 17 teams in the field were either nationally ranked or receiving votes.
Steed delivered the signature performance of the young season, capturing individual medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 213 (-3).
The Wilmington, Ohio, sophomore opened with a 1-under 71 and closed with an even-par 72. With the tournament on the line, Steed played his final nine holes in 1-under 35 without a bogey to secure the individual championship and the third tournament victory of his collegiate career.
Transylvania finished ninth at 28-over par, one shot ahead of then-No. 20 Babson and immediately behind No. 12 Oglethorpe. The Pioneers' opening-round 4-over total placed them sixth and ahead of five nationally ranked teams at the time, including Methodist, Oglethorpe, Lynchburg, Babson and Guilford.
Denton joined Steed under par in the opening round at Gate City with a 1-under performance, while Hickerson and freshman Will Carter, competing individually, each opened at 2-over.
Transylvania then traveled to Kingsmill Resort's River Course in Williamsburg, Virginia, for the NCAA Division III Fall Preview, an early look at the site of the 2027 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.
Once again, Steed led the way.
Coming off his Gate City championship, Steed opened with rounds of 69 (-2) and 68 (-3) to reach 5-under through 36 holes and sit tied for ninth individually. His 68 was Transylvania's low round of the tournament.
Ruttinger opened the Preview with an even-par 71, while Denton bounced back from an opening 75 with a 1-under 70. Hickerson added an even-par 71 in the second round, and Hank Shick opened with a 73.
The Pioneers posted team rounds of 288 (+4) and 285 (+1) over the opening 36 holes, reaching the clubhouse at 573 (+5) and in 10th place against another field loaded with nationally ranked programs.
Through the first three tournaments, Transylvania has already produced several notable individual and team performances. Hickerson owns the team's low round of the fall with his 5-under 67, Steed has posted a 68 and 69 at the NCAA Preview along with his Gate City individual championship, Denton has recorded under-par rounds in all three events, and Ruttinger has provided multiple rounds of par or better.
The Pioneers have also shown their depth, with four different players — Steed, Hickerson, Denton and Ruttinger — contributing rounds of par or better during the opening stretch.
Transylvania's schedule continues to provide national tests. The No. 14 Pioneers return to action Oct. 5-6 at the Blue Streak Invitational at historic Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
