Transylvania University Men's Basketball is excited to welcome Gabe Schmitt back to Lexington as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach.
A proud Transylvania alumnus, Gabe Schmitt returns to his alma mater after gaining valuable coaching experience at both the NCAA Division I and junior college levels. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), where he helped lead the program to a historic season that included a school-record 33 wins, the program's first-ever undefeated conference championship (20-0), a No. 1 seed in the NJCAA National Tournament, and a 26-game winning streak. At DMACC, he played a key role in recruiting, opponent scouting, player development, and building one of the nation's most efficient teams on both ends of the floor.
Before DMACC, Schmitt spent two seasons as a Graduate Assistant at NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University. During his time with the Runnin' Bulldogs, he was heavily involved in player development, defensive game planning, statistical analysis, and day-to-day program
operations. He served as head coach of the developmental team, leading the squad to a 15-3 record. Schmitt played an integral role in the development of 3 Big South All-Conference selections and 5 current overseas professionals.
No stranger to the Transylvania basketball program, Schmitt enjoyed one of the most successful playing careers in recent Pioneer history. A four-year standout for the Pioneers, he scored 1,370 career points to become one of the program's 1,000-point scorers, earned All-HCAC honors twice, including First Team recognition as a senior, and helped lead Transylvania to the 2020 NCAA Division III Tournament.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Schmitt has made stops at North Oldham High School, Trinity High School, and served as Head Coach of the Louisville Prospects 15U AAU program, further demonstrating his commitment to teaching, mentoring, and developing
student-athletes.
Now returning to the place where his collegiate career began, Schmitt brings a passion for Transylvania Basketball, a proven track record in player development, recruiting, scouting, and championship-level success. His experience across multiple levels of college basketball, combined with his deep connection to the Pioneer program, makes him an outstanding addition to the Transylvania Men's Basketball coaching staff.
