NEWPORT, VA - Transylvania closed their weekend tournament at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Inn Classic Sunday, falling in a close battle against University of Saint Joseph.Â
The Pioneers went on a 12 point run after the opening minutes of the game. A pair of jumpers by Colby Napier sparked the offensive run for Transylvania. Saint Joseph responded with a run of their own, making the score 15-14 with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. Brandon Rowe brought the Pioneers within one point by finishing through contact and earning an extra point at the free throw line. Transylvania continued to battle in the closing minutes of the half, with the score being 35-32.Â
Ian Ressor went on a solo 5-0 run to open up the offense for the Pioneers in the second half. Dakota Capps brought the lead by Saint Joseph down to 8 with a 2 point field goal with 3 minutes to play. Ultimately, the Pioneers offense ran out of gas as Saint Joseph pulled away in the closing minutes of the game.Â
Napier led the Pioneers with 21 points shooting 50% from the field. Ian Reesor followed with 16 points and tied with the most rebounds for the Pioneers. Hunter Penn tied Reesor grabbing 7 rebounds, all being on the defensive end.
Transylvania will begin Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, December 4th for their home opener against Earlham College. Tip off is set for 7:30 pm at the Clive M. Beck Center.Â
