Baseball Opens Season With Two Wins Over Maryville

MARYVILLE, TENN. — Transylvania swept Saturday's doubleheader at Maryville, winning 4–0 in Game 1 and 4–1 in Game 2 behind dominant pitching and timely fifth- and third-inning rallies.

In Game 1, Drew Bowles threw six shutout innings with six strikeouts, two walks, and only two hits allowed. All four Pioneer runs came in the fifth inning. Nick Pietromonaco and Seita Shiratori singled to start the frame, Calvin Schubert drove in the first run with an infield single, and Ethan Dillon capped the inning with a three-run homer to right-center. Henry Craig closed the door with a three-inning save, striking out six without giving up a hit. Schubert and Dillon each finished 2-for-4, with Dillon driving in three.

Transylvania carried the momentum into Game 2, scoring twice in the third after singles by Pietromonaco and Shiratori, followed by a two-run double from Schubert. In the fourth, Baxter Tedesco singled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Max Finn. Finn added another RBI single in the sixth to extend the lead. On the mound, Giancarlo Gonzalez worked 6.1 shutout innings with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed. Kemper Dotson and Tristan Cooper covered the middle innings before Luke Patton recorded the final four outs for the save. Schubert went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Finn added two hits and two RBI.

Transylvania took Game 1 by a 4–0 score and Game 2 by a 4–1 final to complete the Saturday sweep.

"We pitched really well today, which was very encouraging," said Head Coach Zack Getsee. "Drew Bowles and Henry Craig were great. Offensively, we came up with timely hits. And it was very good to see us play defense the way we did today."

Transylvania returns to action on Sunday to close the three game series at Maryville, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
