HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Transylvania University men's golf team concluded an impressive season Friday, finishing 17th nationally at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship at Mission Resort.
After surviving a dramatic playoff to advance to the championship's final 36 holes, the Pioneers capped their week with a final-round 294 and secured a 17th national finish against the nation's best programs.
The day was highlighted by strong performances from Sophomore Ty Ruttinger and senior Tom Buchert, who each finished under par for the round. Ruttinger carded a two-under-par 70 while Buchert added a one-under-par 71 as Transylvania continued to battle throughout the final day of competition.
The round also marked the final collegiate appearance for seniors Tom Buchert, William Carr and Connor Calhoun, closing the chapter on three outstanding careers that helped elevate the Pioneers back to the Top 20 national stage.
Ruttinger produced one of the best rounds of the day for Transylvania, opening with a blistering four-under-par 32 on the front nine. He birdied the first, fourth, sixth and ninth holes to make a significant move up the individual leaderboard. After making the turn at four under, Ruttinger played the back nine in three over par to finish with a 70, moving up 22 spots during the final round.
Buchert saved one of his finest rounds of the championship for last. The senior made the turn at one-over-par 37 before catching fire on the inward nine. Birdies on holes 11, 14 and 16 fueled a back-nine 34 and a final-round 71. Buchert climbed 18 positions on the leaderboard during the final round and finished the championship at six-over par.
Carr closed his collegiate career with a 74. The senior recorded birdies on holes one, nine and 17 while contributing another counting score for the Pioneers. Carr finished the championship at 11-over par and was a key contributor throughout Transylvania's postseason run.
Andy Steed battled through the day opening with a solid 38 on the front nine and recorded birdies on holes 10 and 12 before posting a final-round 79.
Calhoun completed his final collegiate round with a 79. The senior highlighted his day with birdies on holes 2 and 14 and closed his Transylvania career after helping guide the program to its 16th NCAA appearance
Transylvania's appearance at the NCAA Championship was highlighted by one of the tournament's most dramatic moments when the Pioneers won a sudden-death playoff to advance to the final two rounds. The team responded by improving its position during both championship rounds before ultimately securing a 17th-place national finish.
The NCAA Championship appearance caps another landmark season for the Pioneers, who advanced through conference, regional and national competition while maintaining their status as one of Division III's elite programs.
