LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Kristin Tenhundfeld (W. Chester, Ohio) celebrated Senior Day in style Saturday, scoring two goals in Transy's 4-0 victory over Anderson in women's Heartland Conference soccer play at Hall Field.
Winners of eight of its last nine matches, Transy is 14-3-1 on the season, 8-1 in HCAC play. The Ravens are 4-14-1, 1-7-1. With the win, the Pioneers clinched a tie for the HCAC regular season crown. It is their first regular season title since 2006, although Transy won the HCAC tourney last year, making the NCAA Division III Championship tourney.
Earlham defeated last-place Franklin on Sunday and got the top seed in next week's HCAC tourney by virtue of its regular season win over Transy.
The Pioneers honored six seniors who played their final regular home game at Hall Field: Cori Hickman (Newark, Ohio), Lauren Burton (Lexington, Ky.), Tenhundfeld, Lauren Heineman (Hamilton, Ohio), Rebecca Pasco (Lexington, Ky.), and Sarah Zembrodt (Edgewood, Ky.).
The Pioneers took the lead quickly as Tenhundfeld scored in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Transy fended off any attack from the Ravens and did not allow a single shot. The Pioneers rifled nine shots in the first half.
Transy pushed the pace in the second half as Elizabeth Schmitt (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) scored in the third minute. Tenhundfeld continued her senior day celebration by netting a second goal in the 53rd minute. With 16 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Amy Ghibaudy (Lexington, Ky.) snuck a shot between the goalie and the post to increase the lead to 4-0.
Tenhundfeld led the team with five shots followed by
Ashley Cobane (Nicholasville, Ky.) with three.
Kara Hansel (Florence, Ky.) finished the game with a shutout and two saves. Tenhundfeld and Ghibaudy each have 11 goals on the season to lead the team.
Transy needed a win over Anderson coupled with a loss by Earlham to win the HCAC regular season title outright. Instead, Transy will be the No. 2 seed and will host Mt. St. Joseph in one HCAC touney semifinal game Tuesday at 2 p.m. No. 1 Earlham takes on No. 3 Hanover.
Transy defeated MSJ last week 3-0 on three Tenhundfeld goals. Hanover handed Earlham its only league loss, a 1-0 overtime decision.
The HCAC finals will be held Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed at 1 p.m. The winner gets the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
