Pioneers, Schroeck topple No. 1 Engineers 1-0 in overtime on Opening Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania women's soccer celebrated opening day of the new Transylvania Athletic Field on Saturday by triumphing over the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers 1-0 in overtime.

"We played extremely well today and did everything we needed to do to win the game," said Head Coach Michael Fulton. "We thought it was a total team effort, and we played well in that regard. Our determination showed and it paid off for us in the end."

During the first half, Transylvania showed an aggressive, uptempo offense, but were unable to penetrate the Engineers' net. The game remained scoreless at the end of the first.

"Tied at the half, we reiterated that we needed to open up the game and attack more from the wings. Rose-Hulman was very organized and made it difficult to beat them through the middle of their defense."

Controlling the play, the Pioneers racked up 17 shots on goal before the end of regulation.

It was not until overtime that either team scored, despite Transylvania's offensive dominance on the field.

Nine minutes into overtime, senior Michelle Schroeck knocked a pass into the top right of the net, sailing past the fingertips of Engineer goalkeeper Lucinda Combs, ending the game 1-0. Schroeck, who has scored five goals this season, is ranked seventh in HCAC standings for goals scored.

Seniors Amy Ghibaudy and Abby Felthaus were offensive team leaders. Ghibaudy, who was recently an HCAC player of the week, made the team's first attempt on goal. She tallied up four shots on goal before the game concluded. Felthaus and Schroeck each made three shots on goal, followed by senior Carley Williams, freshman Meredith Murphy, senior Kelsey Meece and senior Lexie DeCamp with one each.

It was the leadership of the veteran seniors made a difference in the game, according to Coach Fulton.

"Our senior class continues to show their desire to win the conference and we are approaching that goal one game at a time," he said.

The new surroundings also aided in the supporting factor, as the new turf field and grand opening ceremonies attracted nearly 500 spectators, the highest attendance of a women's soccer game this season.

"Today was an extraordinary day with the opening of our new facility," said Coach Fulton. "The fans and the support were tremendous and I know our players and our staff enjoyed that experience. We are fortunate to have the support we have and look forward to permenantly moving to our new complex."

Transylvania improves to a 9-3-2 overall record and an HCAC record of 3-1-1.

The Pioneers face another conference foe as they head to Richmond, Indiana on Wednesday for a match-up against Earlham College at 4 p.m.
