HANOVER, Ind. - Transylvania women's tennis dropped their first match of the season Wednesday against the Hanover Panthers, 5-3.
The setback was the first of the season for Transylvania, now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
The no. 1 seeded duo of freshman
Laila El Dessouki and sophomore
Claire Mielcarek battled in the first match of the day against Hanover's Danielle Miller and freshman Mackenzie Spicer. The Pioneers dropped their match by a slim 8-6 margin.
In the two hole, sophomore
Megan Dixon and senior
Victoria Haugli made a strong showing, trumping their Hanover opponents in a tight 8-6 win. But, it was No. 3
Savanna Barnett and
Taylor McCreary that made an impact early, as they fell to Hanover's Kelsey Jones and Alexis Taylor, 8-2.
The Panthers sealed the win over the Pioneers with wins in three of the five completed singles battles.
El Dessouki dominated her No. 2 opponent in straight shutout sets, 6-0, 6-0, leading off the singles matches with intensity.
Megan Dixon made an impact in the four hole thanks to her 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Hanover's Mallory Noble. Haugli went into three sets, but eventually falling to Panther Alexis Taylor, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Barnett made a strong push at No. 5, but couldn't overcome her opponent either, dropping 6-2, 7-5.
Hanover's Allison Poston swept Transylvania's
Jessica Shotwell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, sealing the win over the Pioneers,
The No. 1 singles match with Pioneers' Mielcarek was halted by darkness with Hanover leading 6-4, 4-5.
Transylvania hosts conference opponents Anderson and Franklin this Saturday and SUnday, October 23 and 13th at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively.
