Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio—A high-powered offense gave the Transylvania University women's soccer team a convincing and dominating 7-0 road win over the Defiance College Yellow Jackets. The Pioneers were led by midfielder Maddie Sjogren's two goals and forward Erin Miller's three assists.
Transy was equally as dominating on defense as they picked up their third shutout of the season behind a solid effort in goal by keeper Morgan Potts. Transy allowed just four shots on goal in the contest, two of which came in the first 20 minutes of game play.
The story of the game was a throttling second half that saw the Pioneers score all seven goals and hold the Jackets to just two shots. Midfielder Erin Snyder opened the half with a goal in the 53rd minute off the first of Miller's assist to give Transylvania a 1-0 lead. Miller continued to control the ball and distribute it to her teammates effectively as she picked up her second assist at the 56:48 mark, this time passing the ball to midfielder Ellie New who finished to put Transy up two goals.
The advantage continued to build quickly as the Pioneers scored again in the 61st minute. This time it was Miller getting in on the scoring action, benefiting from a great pass from midfielder Erin Koch. Not to be outdone, Koch scored less than 30 seconds later to give the Pioneers a four-goal advantage.
Leading 4-0, it was the Transylvania freshmen who took center stage as midfielder Nicole Pereyo scored her first career goal in the 70th minute with an assist from Sjogren. Seven minutes later, Sjogren took an assist from midfielder Noel Obata and drove it past the Defiance keeper to move Transy out in front 6-0. Sjogren continued her attack and capped the scoring for Transylvania at the 81:46 mark with another goal.
"We played very well today despite being tied 0-0 at halftime," said head coach Michael Fulton. "We were outstanding and clinical with our finishing. We showed great energy and enthusiasm, which is so important in conference play."
Transy moves to 6-6-2 and 4-1-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. They will return to the pitch on Tuesday with a home contest against Mount St. Joseph at 7:00pm.
