Women's soccer loses on goal in 110th minute

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind.—Transylvania University's women's soccer team was handed its first loss of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a goal deep into the second overtime period against the Franklin College Grizzlies.

Transy withstood a flurry of Franklin shots in the contest to take the game into overtime but a goal with just 42 seconds remaining the golden goal second overtime ended the match with the Pioneers on the losing end.

Midfielder Lindsey Sizemore kickstarted the opportunistic Pioneer offense with a shot on goal in the 3rd minute but she was deterred by the Grizzly goalkeeper who recorded the first of her six saves in the match. Several minutes later, midfielder Erin Miller took a crack at goal but she missed wide to leave the score even at zero.

Franklin attacked and pressed the Transylvania defense with 10 shots in the first half, but the Pioneer defense limited legitimate scoring opportunities for the Grizzlies, allowing just two of those shots to be put on target. Transylvania goalie Ally Barfield recorded saves on both attempts and the teams took a 0-0 score into the intermission.

In the second half, Franklin continued to press forward and challenge but time and time again, the Transylvania defense tightened up at the right moments and Barfield continued her strong performance in the net, recording eight saves on eight shots on target in the period.

Transylvania's offense was methodical and controlled the ball as they looked for the right moment to take their opportunities. Transylvania took just eight shots in the match but put six of their attempts on target, including a shot from midfielder Erin Snyder at the 84:03 mark that was saved by the Franklin keeper and the score remained deadlocked at zero.

In the first overtime period, neither team was able to put a shot on target as the first 10 minutes of overtime ended without breaking the tie. In the second OT, Transylvania battled until the closing minute, when Franklin's Jillian Lawrence beat Barfield for the game-winner in the 110th minute.

Transylvania (2-6-2, 0-1-1 HCAC) will look to get back on track on Saturday with a home matchup against Rose-Hulman. That match is slated to kickoff at 1:00pm.
