Pioneers fall to HCAC preseason favorite

HANOVER, Ind.— Hanover College, the preseason favorite to win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title, ended the Pioneers' win streak with an 8-1 win over Transy at the Zeddies Tennis Center Wednesday.

The Pioneers had won their previous three matches picking up two HCAC wins over Earlham College and Defiance College, along with non-conference opponent Berea College.

The Panthers took the first three sets in doubles play to jump out to a 3-0 lead, as the teams went into singles play.

Reigning HCAC Player of the Week, Claire Mielcarek, and Hanover's Mackenzie Spicer battled in a No. 1 singles match. Mielcarek took the first set 6-4, but Spicer was able to rally and take to the next two sets for the win.

Megan Dixon notched the lone point for the Pioneers in the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hanover's Susan Wintemheimer.

Transy will host Anderson (Ind.) Saturday for another HCAC match, as the Pioneers look to improve to 3-2 in conference play. Saturday's match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
