Box Score Terre Haute, Ind.- The Transylvania women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime defeat at the hands of the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers on Saturday afternoon at Jim Rendel Field.
The Pioneers were led offensively by the quartet of veterans Morgan Janes, Noel Obata, Charlotte Pruet, and Erin Snyder who each contributed a shot on goal in the contest.
The first half of the game was an even match between the two teams. Both Rose-Hulman and Transylvania recorded three shots in the period, and the score remained even at zero heading into the break. Each team bided their time waiting to mount an offensive attack and hoped to pounced as the second half opened.
As the second half progressed, Rose-Hulman began to take control of the game offensively. The Fightin' Engineers outshot the Pioneers 8-2 in the half. However, Transylvania's defensive line held strong and fought off every major threat by the Engineers, and they refused to surrender a goal in regulation.
After failing to score in the first overtime period, both teams moved into the final period of extra time still hungry for the win. With five minutes remaining in the second overtime session, Rose-Hulman drew a valuable penalty kick. Engineers midfielder Madeline Romeo converted a penalty-kick to end the game with the 1-0 sudden victory.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Potts contributed another stellar performance to the Pioneers cause, as she recorded six saves while only allowing one goal in the final moments of the match.
Next up, the Pioneers will look to secure their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season, as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to face the Lions of Mt. St. Joseph University. The match is set for a 7:00 PM start on Wednesday, October 5.
