Pioneers Women's Soccer outdueled by No. 5 Saints

Box Score

Crestview Hills, Ky. – The Transylvania women's soccer team endured a 4-0 setback against one of the current powers in Division III soccer, the No. 5 nationally-ranked Thomas More Saints on Tuesday night at BB&T Field.

The Pioneers headed to Crestview Hills in Northern Kentucky, the site of the Saints, for the chance to upset a team that entered Wednesday unbeaten with a record of 5-0-1 and ready for more.

Transylvania swung first with a shot on goal in the fourth minute of the match, but Thomas More became the first team to find the back of the net on this afternoon with a score just under three minutes later by Olivia Neinaber to put the Saints on the board early.

The Pioneers crafted brief opportunities against the Saints but both sides shifted into defensively tight formations, and the next half hour of the contest proceeded with little fanfare for either team.

Heading into the second third of the contest, the Saints began mustering a wave of shots against the Pioneers that goalkeeper Morgan Potts began parrying away. But late in the first half, Thomas More's Taylor Robinson connected on goal to hand her Saints a 2-0 lead and put the home team comfortably ahead for the rest of the contest.

While the game grew increasingly physical in the second half, the Pioneers still awaited a breakthrough to the net.  The Saints fended off the remaining ideas of the Pioneers as the game drew to a close, allowing the host team to enjoy its undefeated beginning for at least one more week.

Potts collected five saves on the afternoon to add to her season total of 42 saves, which stands in the top-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers now look ahead to a quick stop at home as they play host to Illinois Wesleyan, their final nonconference opponent before preparing for HCAC play one week later.

Transylvania squares off with Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington.
