Indianapolis – Appearing in the team's second consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament under head coach Kevin Calhoun, the Transylvania women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 quarterfinal match to the Manchester University Spartans on Friday night.

The No. 5 seeded Pioneers traveled to the West Indy Racquet Club searching for some revenge over the Spartans after dropping the regular season finale by the score of 5-4 at Manchester last Saturday.

However, the Spartans took control of the match early, as they earned a convincing 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles play.

The Pioneers displayed resolve as the pair of junior Kearstin Bruther and sophomore Lucy Herrington fought hard before dropping the No. 2 doubles matchup 8-6 to Manchester's Katie Peden and Katy Ashpole in the second-consecutive closely-contested doubles match between the quartet in seven days.

The No. 3 doubles bout offered the same type of promise, but freshman Anna Burch and freshman Madison Campbell suffered an 8-6 defeat at the hands of Karly Eichenauer and Avis McGovern.

Holding a 3-0 lead after doubles play, Manchester wasted little time in securing the match as Transylvania senior Mary Grace Amato fell to Erin Cordill, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles play, and fellow senior Lilian Williams dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles, ending the Pioneers' run in the HCAC Tournament.

After wrapping up the HCAC portion of the 2017-18 season, the women's team will return to the courts in February 2018 to continue spring play.
