Box Score Hanover, Ind. – A cold shooting night doomed the Transylvania women's basketball team as it lost 64-67 to the Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday night at the Spurlock Center.
With the loss, Transylvania's record falls to 9-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and 15-5 overall. The Pioneers were defeated in part to a 12-4 Hanover run over the final eight minutes of the game.
Sophomore guard Celia Kline led the Pioneers in scoring with 21 points, as she went 6-of-14 from beyond the three-point line. Kline was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Kristen Hayes, who turned in a 12-point performance off the bench in the Pioneers' loss.
The Pioneers led 18-15 heading into the second quarter behind a sharpshooting Kline, who drilled three 3-pointers in the quarter. However, the Panthers seized the game in the second quarter, as they outscored Transylvania 22-12, giving the home team a seven-point lead going into the halftime break.
Transylvania's shooting came back to life in the third quarter, as the Pioneers jumped back in front by two points heading to the fourth quarter. The Pioneers shot 46 percent in comparison to the Panthers' 31 percent in the quarter, and forced Hanover into seven turnovers.
Ultimately the fourth quarter proved to be the Pioneers undoing, as they went without a basket over a stretch of six minutes. Two potential game-tying 3-point shots in the final five seconds would not fall for Transylvania as they fell by the final score of 64-67.
Transylvania was hampered all night by an uncharacteristically bad shooting performance. The Pioneers shot 8-for-25 from three-point range and 19-for-58 from the field. Additionally, the Pioneers went 18-for-25 from the free-throw line, a far cry from their 12-for-12 performance against Anderson on Saturday.
Up next the Pioneers will continue their current four-game road trip as they travel to Bluffton, Ohio to face the Bluffton University Beavers in a crucial HCAC matchup. The game is set for a 3:00 p.m. start at the Sommer Center.
