Anderson, Ind. - For the first time in three tries, the Anderson University Ravens defeated the Transylvania women's basketball team 60-52 on Saturday afternoon at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Laken Ball led the Pioneers with 12 points off the bench but the Ravens put together sufficient three-point offense to fight past Transylvania at home.
The Pioneers dropped to 6-5 overall and 3-2 versus Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition while the Ravens improved to 2-3 overall.
The Pioneers quickly assembled their team for a quick trek up to Anderson for the second time this season after the previously scheduled weekend home-and-home series with Earlham was cancelled. The Pioneers and Ravens had previously dueled in the opening week of HCAC play with the Pioneers winning in Lexington, 64-46, and beating Anderson 65-60 in Anderson, Indiana two weeks ago.
Following a defensively-themed opening quarter, the Pioneers held a 9-7 lead. Using a sharp 9 for 15 figure from the field in the second quarter, Anderson pulled ahead 16-9 two and a half minutes into the quarter. Despite a tough shooting quarter, the Pioneers found success in the paint to only trail by three points at the half, 26-23.
The Pioneers were unable to make up the gap in the third quarter while the Ravens connected on 3 of 7 shots from downtown to build upon their lead and take a 42-34 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Anderson scored the first two buckets of the final period to grow a double-digit lead before Calynn Jackson hit a free throw and Zenoviah Walker struck inside to cut Transy's lead down to nine. The Ravens provided a timely three-point bucket on the following possession and marked down another at the 4:32 mark to stay firmly ahead of the Pioneers.
Transylvania provided one final rally, slicing the Anderson lead to 56-50 on an inside score from Dasia Thornton, but the Ravens hit on 4 of 6 free throws in the final 40 seconds to clinch the win.
Anderson relied on a significant three-point advantage to seal the win, hitting 7 of 18 three-point attempts while the Pioneers knocked down 2 of 19 triples on Saturday.
Thornton had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers while Grace Shope paced all players with four steals and added one of Transy's four blocks on the day.
Transylvania is next scheduled to play the Franklin College Grizzlies in a back-to-back home-and-home series beginning, Friday, February 5 with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at the Beck Center before the teams rematch the following day at 7:00 p.m. in Franklin, Indiana.
