Transylvania volleyball falls at Earlham in HCAC matchup

Richmond, Ind. – The Transylvania volleyball team took the best shot on Wednesday night from the Earlham College Quakers, falling 25-18, 25-18, 28-26 at the Druley Performance Center.

The Pioneers endured their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season to fall to 3-1 in HCAC play and 13-11 overall. Earlham improved to 3-1 in conference play and 14-5 overall.

Sylvie Miller led a strong backline effort with a career-high 28 digs but the Pioneers were unable to overcome an error-riddled opening set that consisted of six service errors, contributing to a .167 attacking percentage in the frame.

Earlham kept up its furious pace of play in the second set, racking up 15 kills to nine by the Pioneers.

Transylvania tried to extend the evening, going back and forth with Earlham in a tightly contested third set. The Quakers broke an 11-11 tie to capture a 15-12 advantage, later appearing primed to cruise to the finish line with a 21-17 lead. But the Pioneers scored five straight points down the stretch to seize a 22-21 advantage. Earlham again countered with a run of three straight scores to arrive at match point, but the Pioneers swung back for a 24-24 game. With the set tied at 26-26, Earlham came up with two clutch finishers to retire the Pioneers on Wednesday in straight sets.

Madison Sweeney led the Pioneers with 10 kills while Suzanne Klosterman provided nine. Makayla Davis led Transylvania with 17 assists.

Transylvania is back on the road this weekend, heading up to Defiance, Ohio to take on the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at 1:00 p.m. in a conference contest followed by a nonconference match versus the Adrian College Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.
