The Transylvania Field Hockey team came up on the short end of a tightly-fought 1-0 contest against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday morning at Tomasini Stadium.
Â
Pursuing a win against its SAA conference foes, the Pioneers started off the morning strong with a quick carry into their offensive 25. Transylvania maintained an aggressive domination of the first quarter, with the first shot of the match coming from
Mirabel Noltemeyer, and followed by two back to back penalty corner attempts taken by junior captain
Makenna Saward. Staving off Transylvania's early attempts on goal, the Eagles quickly drilled the ball into the Pioneers' circle, resulting in three failed shots on goal.
Â
The Pioneers maintained momentum in the second quarter, keeping the ball in their offensive 25 for the majority of the quarter. The Falcons gained a foothold with a strong shot on cage by Renee Lund, but could not complete the finisher. Concordia saw five more shot attempts in the quarter, four of which were saved by Pioneer keeper
Libby Bringard. The Pioneer defense held firm against the Falcons, maintaining a 0-0 score going into halftime.
Â
The Eagles marked a change in pace in the second half with a fast attempt on goal by Lori Pitock. The Pioneer defense gave a determined attempt at keeping the Falcons at bay, evetually yielding five penalty corners. Bringard staved off the majority of the attempts, but the Falcons were successful on the last of their corners, scoring via a shot by Concordia's AnnaLyssia Abela for what would end up being the lone goal of the day.
Â
The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with an early penalty corner drawn by Noltemeyer, quickly followed by a shot attempt by freshman
Kayla Bushman and two more shot attempts by Noltemeyer. The Pioneers drew three more penalty corners in the final quarter, but were unable to find a tying goal along the way.
