Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's basketball team completed its weekend and regular season sweep of the Hanover College Panthers with a 99-78 win on Sunday afternoon at the Beck Center.
For the second straight game against Hanover, the Pioneers eclipsed their season-high in scoring, surpassing 90 points for the first time this season for their fourth straight victory to move to 10-5 overall on the 2020-21 season and 7-2 against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents. The Panthers fell to 4-3 overall and 4-3 versus HCAC opponents.
Five different Pioneers scored in double figures on Sunday, led by Laken Ball's 18 points on 5 for 8 shooting from the floor and 3 for 5 three-point shooting.
Zenoviah Walker led the Pioneers with seven assists and added 12 points, five rebounds, and added two 3-balls in the win. The Pioneers assisted on 21 of 34 made field goals for the afternoon.
The Pioneers hit exactly three 3-pointers in each quarter for a significant offensive boost on the afternoon, ignited by a 12 for 23 showing from the floor in the opening quarter and a 3 for 9 clip from downtown.
Grace Shope hit all three of her treys in the opening half to vault Transylvania to a 29-19 lead after the first quarter. The Pioneers kept their foot on the pedal in the second quarter, outscoring Hanover 24-16 behind an early 8-0 run in the quarter. Transylvania exploded for a 10-0 run later on in the quarter, propelled by inside buckets from Ball and Mirando Otero to stretch the first half lead to 49-27 with 3:25 left.
Transylvania won all four quarters of the game and scored 22 points or more in all four quarters in displaying its offensive firepower. The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the floor and nailed all seven of their free throws in the final quarter for a 24-point fourth quarter.
Madison Kellione added 16 points, three assists, three rebounds, and three steals on 6 for 11 shooting from the field in 24 minutes of play. Shope furnished another balanced line with a season-high 15 points, adding four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Calynn Jackson was the other double-digit scorer for Transylvania with 11 points, two rebounds, and an efficient 5 for 7 shooting line from the floor.
The Pioneers overpowered Hanover on the glass, winning the battle of the boards 45 to 29. Otero led the way on the boards with eight rebounds to go with eight points.
Transylvania springs into action next on Thursday, February 18 in Bluffton, Ohio to visit the Bluffton University Beavers. Tip-off between Transy and Bluffton is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Sommer Center.
