Emory, Va. - In a reversal of yesterday's pair of games for the No. 11 Transylvania softball team, the Pioneers defeated the Emory & Henry Wasps, 3-1 before falling to the No. 4 Christopher Newport Captains, 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Wasps Field.
Facing the two Atlantic powers for the second time in two days, the Pioneers wrapped up their eastern trip exacting revenge upon the Wasps from the day before to split the series with the weekend hosts to wrap up the weekend. After being battered by the Pioneers 15-7 yesterday, the Captains returned the favor to Transylvania with a five-inning 8-0 win in Sunday morning's first game.
Transylvania now stands at 9-2 overall, completing an 11-game trek on the road to begin the season.
The Captains jumped on the Pioneers with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on one run apiece in the third and fourth innings before reaching the magic number of eight runs in the fifth with two runs to close out the game in walk-off fashion.
Transylvania presented the Captains with their greatest threat in the top of the fourth, trailing 5-0. Carson Murray drew a walk to lead off the inning and Annie Schuck followed with a base hit to left center. After Murray was retired at third on a fielder's choice by Alyssa Nunn, CeCe Wittry drew a walk to load the bases. Gracie Vallejos struck out Stella Wulker to end the inning as the Captains ace worked her way towards a complete-game shutout win.
Kameron Bowling took the loss for the Pioneers with five strikeouts against five walks and seven hits conceded. Abby Frazier led the Pioneers with a 2 for 3 game at the plate while Taylor Senter provided a double in the loss.
The Pioneers took aim at Emory & Henry in their final game in Virginia, slamming the door on the Wasps with timely offensive plays led again by Frazier coupled with a masterful performance from Wittry upon the circle. Wittry went the distance to pick up her second win of the season with a complete-game performance, issuing no walks and a strikeout.
Wittry and her counterpart, Alex Braun, each carried no-hitters into the fourth inning. Abby Frazier ended Braun's reign with a solo home run shot in the top of the fourth, giving Transy a 1-0 lead. The Wasps collected three of their six hits in the bottom half of the inning but Wittry induced the final batter into an inning-ending double play to maintain a 1-0 Pioneer advantage.
With the game still standing at 1-0 heading into the sixth, Frazier showed off her power again with a lead-off home run to left field to double Transylvania's lead. Nunn later delivered a single to left field and Becca Messing came home on a throwing error to lengthen the Transylvania lead to 3-0.
The Wasps scored on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, but Wittry limited the Wasps rally as no further damage was done. With the Pioneers carrying a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Wittry induced another Captains batter into a double play and retired the final hitter one at-bat later to secure the win.
Frazier finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBI. Nunn had a 2 for 3 showing at the plate and also bagged a stolen base. Murray added two walks drawn to aid in the Pioneer scoring effort.
Transylvania now looks ahead to its 2021 home opener on Friday, March 19 against Depauw University. The Pioneers will host the Tigers at Hall Field for a crucial nonconference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
