Lexington, Ky. -
Courtney Pontious scored a season-high seven goals to lead the Transylvania women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 win over the Wittenberg University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to her seven goals, Pontious's spectacular performance also included two assists, six ground balls, and a draw control.
Salem Carlow was also crucial to the Pioneers' offense on Sunday. The senior recorded a hat-trick along with two assists, four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls.
The Transylvania defense was on full display in the victory as the Pioneers forced three possession clock violations by the Tigers and held them to just three goals on the day, the fewest allowed by a Transylvania defense since May 2019.
Less than two minutes into the game,
Abbey Peterson put Transylvania on top, 1-0. Carlow added two straight goals over the next five minutes to pad the Pioneers' lead to 3-0. Transylvania outscored Wittenberg 4-1 over the remainder of the half to take a 7-1 lead into the halftime break.
After a Wittenberg goal early in the second half, Pontious scored three straight goals to push Transylvania's lead out to 10-2.
While the Transylvania defense continued to stifle the Tigers, four different Pioneers combined to score five goals over the final 20 minutes of play to author the 15-3 final.
The Pioneers will return to action on Monday, March 29, when they host the Georgetown College Tigers. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
