Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team wrapped up a busy weekend with an 8-1 victory over the Franklin College Grizzlies at Top Seed Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 5-1 on the season, and 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the Grizzlies fall to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Pioneers kicked off the day with a pair of 8-1 wins by the teams of
Porsche Robinson and
Jessica Burton, and
Grace Gardner and
Alyssa Igyarto in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.
The duo of
Christina Duvall and
Erin Biddle put the Pioneers on top, 3-0 with an 8-2 win in the No. 3 doubles matchup.
In singles action, the Pioneers continued to dominate the Grizzlies with both Robinson and Burton claiming 6-1, 6-1 victories in the top two singles matchups. Gardner added an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles while Igyarto tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match.
Duvall secured the Pioneers' final victory of the day, claiming a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 5 singles match to propel Transylvania to the 8-1 overall match victory.
"This was a great weekend of tennis for the team as we got a solid start to conference play," remarked Transylvania head coach
Bill Carey. "The weekend was truly a team effort."
Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to North Manchester, Indiana, for a matchup against the Manchester University Spartans on Saturday, April 24. The match between the Pioneers and the Spartans is set for an 11:00 a.m. start at the MU Tennis Courts.
