The Transylvania volleyball team made quick work of the Spalding University Eagles on Tuesday evening in a 25-18, 25-13, 25-22 victory at the Beck Center.
Transylvania improved to 9-9 overall while Spalding fell to 4-8 on the season.
The Pioneers received balanced performances from everyone across the roster, led by Kaetlin Ethington's match-high 12 kills to go with three digs. Ethington delivered a scorching .526 attacking percentage on the evening.
Karrington Jackson joined Ethington as a high-efficiency performer with a .714 attacking percentage, striking five kills to no errors. Jackson added two blocks in the win.
The Pioneers came out firing in the first set, turning a 6-5 lead into a 13-5 advantage as Sylvie Miller held serve and came up with three aces during the run, including back to back aces on the final two points of the 8-0 blanking. Suzanne Klosterman and Madison Sweeney powered the Pioneers down the home stretch to a seven-point opening set win.
Transylvania submitted a nearly perfect set in the second set, totaling 16 kills against one error for a .600 attacking percentage. With the set tied at 11-11, Transylvania sandwiched a pair of 6-0 bursts around a Spalding point to quickly put the set out of reach. Miller added another ace during the second run to complete her tally of a match-high four aces.
The Pioneers showed off their full repertoire in the third set with 18 kills. Ethington reeled off six kills while Klosterman provided four. Erin Nerland and Julianna Hakel combined for five kills to aid in the offensive peppering by the Pioneers.
Grace Ward led the way with 22 assists while Makayla Davis handed out 16. Ava Beltsos led all players with 10 digs as part of a balanced Transy defensive effort.
Transylvania now looks ahead to conference play beginning with a Saturday, October 2 bout at the Bluffton University Beavers. The Pioneers will face Bluffton at 1:00 p.m. at the Sommer Center in Bluffton followed by a nonconference matchup between Transylvania and Trine University on the Bluffton campus at 3:00 p.m.
