Hanover, Ind. – The No. 3 Transylvania women's basketball team continued its best start in program history with an authoritative 84-60 win against the Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday night at Collier Arena.
Grace Shope canned a season-high five 3-pointers to lead the Pioneers with 19 points in a wire-to-wire win.
The Pioneers moved to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while Hanover fell to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference standings.
Transylvania displayed a potent offense in the first half, using a 59 percent field-goal shooting display in the first half to build a 24-14 lead after one quarter. The Pioneers accelerated their offense even more intensely, hitting 5 of 12 three-pointers in the second quarter to build a 51-26 halftime lead. Four different Pioneers nailed a threeball in the second quarter as Shope led the way with two of her five makes in the period.
Hanover found its shooting touch in the second half, hitting 8 of 15 field goals in the third quarter, but the Pioneers maintained their distance by taking advantage of second chance points, outscoring Hanover 19-8 in that category for the evening.
The 84 points was Transylvania's second highest scoring output of the season, only trailing their 103-point showing at Eastern Nazarene on November 19, 2021. The Pioneers displayed their offensive repertoire just one game after holding Anderson to the lowest scoring output by a Transy opponent this season at 36 points.
Wednesday's double-digit victory also marked Transylvania's eighth win of the season by 20 points or more.
Three other Pioneers joined in on the double-digit scoring as Kennedi Stacy nailed 4 of 7 triples to finish with 16 points and Laken Ball shot a sharp 7 for 11 from the floor to also register 16 points along with eight rebounds.
Madison Kellione piloted the Pioneer offense with a career-high eight assists, 14 points, and four rebounds, hitting 6 of 9 shots. Dasia Thornton finished one point away from a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points on 4 for 5 shooting from the field.
Transylvania held a commanding 45-32 rebound advantage over the Panthers.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, January 22 to visit the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers in Terre Haute, Indiana for a 1:00 p.m. tip. Due to rising covid cases in the Terre Haute area, spectators are currently not permitted to attend Rose-Hulman athletic events.
