Lexington, Ky. - On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium, the Transylvania men's lacrosse team vanquished the Rhodes College Lynx by a final score of 20-8. The win makes the Pioneers 3-0 to start the 2022 season.Â
The Pioneers came out of the gates absolutely firing with 5 unanswered goals on 5 straight shots within the first six minutes of the game, all coming from different players. Peyton Bray broke through with a wicked bouncing shot to put the Pios up 1-0. Tai Stormont buried an ankle-breaking wrap around to make it a two goal lead. Liam Harari and AJ Teague found the back of the net to make it 4-0. Dalton Hubbs made it a 5-0 Pioneers lead, and was just getting started in the afternoon.Â
Second goals on the day from both Harari and Hubbs made it a 7-0 score by the end of the first quarter, with Transylvania in full control.Â
In the second quarter, Rhodes came out and found an answer with two goals in just 8 seconds, scoring again three minutes later to make it a 7-3 contest. However, Hubbs completed the first half hat trick to squash the comeback attempt. Just two minutes later, he sniped one home to make it 9-3 Pioneers, giving Hubbs a four goal first half. As the first half winded down, Dylan Mordhorst scored to give Transy a 11-3 lead at the midway point.Â
Coming out of the halftime break, Rhodes had the first goal coming at the 11:28 mark in the quarter but Hubbs once again answered with his fifth of the game, making it 12-4. A few minutes later, at the 7:31 mark, A Bryce Lowe tally added onto the lead for Transylvania. The Lynx responded with their fifth of the game, but Hubbs showed no mercy and buried his sixth of the match in response.Â
Going into the fourth quarter with the score being 14-6, the teams exchanged a couple of goals through the midway point, with Transylvania midfielder Will Warner getting his first of the day. Quickly after, Transylvania added on with goals from Kayd Aquino and Preston Weinberg.Â
The barrage of offense gave the Pios a monumental 10 goal lead at 17-7 with five minutes remaining in the game. Transylvania kept their foot on the gas, and Hubbs could not be stopped. He scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game, bringing his total for the game to an astonishing 9 scores. Both teams scored one more each before the clock ran down to zero, making it a final score of 20-8 and the Pios taking the win for their third on the season.
Besides Hubbs' remarkable 9 goal performance, a career high, several freshmen set milestones as well. Tai Stormont, Dylan Mordhorst, Preston Weinberg, and Tucker Strode all scored their first career goals. First year goalies Brandon Worzel and Topher Hays also spent time in between the pipes notching their first saves.Â
The Transylvania men's lacrosse team looks to continue rolling as they host Capital University on Saturday, March 5th at Pat Deacon Stadium, with a scheduled 4:00 PM start.Â
