Transylvania baseball shut out Alfred State behind Davis' 14 strikeouts

Florence, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team shut out the Alfred State Pioneers 4-0 at the Y'alls Ballpark in Florence, Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon, in a very well-rounded performance from the team.

Freshman pitcher Preston Davis took the ball for the Pioneers of Transylvania, and had a masterful outing in his first start. Davis made quick work of the first two innings, allowing a single in the first, but struck out four, all swinging, in the first two frames. Transy broke through in the bottom of the second, as freshman Braden Becker drove in Walter Munday on a single to center, for his first RBI.

In the top of the third, Davis continued to assert himself on the mound, and setting the tone on the afternoon. The freshman pitched an immaculate inning, striking out the side on 9 pitches.

After the remarkable pitching feat in the top of the third, Transylvania had their biggest offensive frame of the contest in the bottom of the inning. Calvin Schubert walked to start to get things started, and quickly found himself on third after a successful steal and a wild pitch. Trent Pahl knocked him in with a sacrifice fly, and Trent Youngblood backed it up by ripping one to center for a triple. Youngblood came home afterward to make it 3-0 Transy.

Davis continued to deal on the mound, walking one batter in the fifth and one in the sixth, but otherwise cruising straight through the Alfred State lineup. Pahl doubled in the bottom of the sixth and came around to score on a fielder's choice, tacking up another run, 4-0 Transy in control.

In the seventh, the Alfred State Pioneers managed to get their second hit of the day off of the freshman Davis, both being just singles. However, Transy retired the side, and the inning proved to be his final inning of work. On the afternoon, Davis went 7.0 innings, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks, with a remarkable total of 14 strikeouts.

Matt Armstrong came in to take the 8th and 9th innings on the mound, making quick work as well, allowing no hits, no walks, and 3 strikeouts. Transylvania took the game by a final score of 4-0, with 9 hits on the day. Their four runs were more than enough thanks to the tremendous pitching and defensive performance.

The Pioneers are right back at it tomorrow as they take on Maryville College at Earle Combs Stadium, in Richmond, Kentucky, with a 7:00 PM scheduled start. After tomorrow's game, they have six more to close out the week, including another against Alfred State in Florence, on Thursday at 11:00 AM.
