Orlando, Florida - Over the week of spring break at Transylvania University, the Pioneer women's tennis team traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete. The Pioneers were scheduled to face off against six different schools over the same amount of days, but due to poor weather conditions they were only able to compete against four of the teams scheduled. Those teams were Connecticut College, Bethel University (MN), Carthage College, and Pacific University (OR).
Throughout the week the team performed well, rising to the occasion in a tough test against their competition. The Pioneers notched two wins before heading home, those wins coming against Connecticut College and Bethel (MN).
First-year
Katherine Taylor had standout performances throughout the week, going 3-0 in singles, and 3-0 in doubles, pairing up with both
Grace Gardner and
Sheila Cetina. Her play earned her the HCAC Athlete of the Week award for women's tennis,
announced Monday.
In the match against Connecticut College, the Pioneer women won all three doubles matches (8-3) (8-4) (8-4) as well as four of the six singles matches.
Against Bethel (MN), the team once again performed at an extremely high level. They took the victory in two of the three doubles matches (8-1) (8-2) as well as taking three singles victories.
Head coach
Bill Carey was very proud of his team as he said: "Our trip to Orlando featured some really high-quality matches against very good non-conference opponents that will serve us well as we spend the next month prepping for the NCAA tournament. Aside from some great individual play, I would say that it also featured one of this groups best team efforts. I was thrilled with the way they performed through some difficult conditions and really glad that they had a chance to spend a lot of time together as a team as well."
The Pios have one match remaining, March 27 against Berea College at Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, before heading into the NCAA Tournament in early May.
