Lexington, Ky.- The Transylvania men's lacrosse team moved to 5-0 on the season as they shut down the DePauw University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night, taking the game by a score of 11-3.
The Pioneers came out of the gates aggressively and got on the board first. The goal came at the 12:17 mark from junior midfielder Will Warner, his third on the season. Six minutes later the Pios got on the board again with a strike coming from senior attacker Quinn Fox, also his third of the year. Freshman Tai Stormont scored his second on the season, assisted by Liam Harari, just over a minute after Fox's to make it 3-0 with under five minutes remaining in the period. The rest of the quarter went scoreless as the Pioneers went into the second with a 3-0 lead. First-year goalie Topher Hays put on a great first period performance with 2 solid saves and no goals allowed.
The Pioneers continued to put numbers on the board in the second, as Fox scored his second goal of the night coming with just over 10 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Tigers found some momentum in the form of two goals in the final six minutes, to close out the half with a 4-2 score in favor of Transylvania.
To start the second half, the Pioneers made a statement just six seconds in, as first-year midfielder Preston Weinberg found the back of the net. Transylvania got on the board again with a goal from first-year attacker Ryan Geisler with 11:08 remaining. Four minutes later the Pioneers continued their scoring display with another strike from Weinberg, assisted by Stormont. Bryce Lowe got in on the action with a goal of his own at the 6:19 mark to make the score 8-2, putting Transy in full control.
For the fourth quarter the Pioneer defense held steady, as Hays continued to keep the Tigers off the board with sharp goaltending. The Pios pushed the lead to 7 with a goal coming from Andrew Hamill at the 7:27 mark. After using much of the clock on each possession, the Pioneers found the back of the net for the 10th time from a deep strike by first-year midfielder Dylan Mordhorst with a Fox assist. Stormont scored another goal on the day shortly after with another assist coming from Fox. DePauw closed out the scoring on the contest with a late goal coming at the 28 second mark. The Pioneer defense was strong Wednesday night, led by Hays' 7 saves on the day while only allowing 3 goals. Transylvania took the game 11-3.
The Pioneers set their sights on another home win on Monday, March 14, as they host Muhlenberg College with a 3:30 PM scheduled start.
