Richmond, In. – The Transylvania baseball team lost a pair of tough games in a doubleheader at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers put up seven runs in game one but ended up losing 12-7. In game two they fought back to tie things up in the sixth, but were doomed by a seventh inning grand slam, dropping the game 14-5.
In game one, Transylvania was quick to get on the board, taking advantage of wild pitch as Calvin Schubert took off and came home to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, the Quakers had a pair of two out hits, but Preston Davis pitched through it and escaped. Earlham hit a two-run homer in the second to take the lead, but Transy quickly tied it in the third as Griffin Hall knocked an RBI single, with Schubert touching home again.
Earlham scored in the fourth, but Walter Munday responded with an RBI single, making it 3-3, as the teams went back and forth. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Quakers went on a roll in the fifth and sixth innings, taking a large 11-3 lead. Trent Youngblood and Trent Pahl hit back to back homers, along with a Matt Broadwater RBI single. Brennan Perry also came home on a pick off play, making it a four run game, but the Quakers tacked on another run in the seventh and won 12-7.
In game two, Transylvania jumped out to the early lead from a Pahl single that scored two in the bottom of the first. However, Earlham found four runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-2 lead. Schubert came up big with a long ball, the Pios' third of the night, but Earlham took the run right back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3.
The Pioneers continued to fight back, as Austin Taylor drew a bases loaded walk and Schubert continued to produce offense with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 5-5. From there, Earlham reclaimed the lead in the sixth from a triple that scored one, and they added to it in the seventh with seven runs, including a grand slam. The Quakers held Transy off the board for the remainder of the night for a 14-5 win.
Transylvania is back in action this weekend, for a Saturday doubleheader against Rose-Hulman on April 16th with a 2 & 5 PM scheduled start. The pair of games are to be played at Jim Patterson Stadium at the University of Louisville.
