LEXINGTON - The No. 2 ranked Transylvania Women's Basketball won their 43rd consecutive game on Friday afternoon, defeating Edgewood College 62-46 in the opening game of the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament after surviving a 2nd half scare from the Eagles. With the win, the Pioneers advance to the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM.
The Pioneers opened the first quarter by scoring the game's first 12 points, and went into the second quarter with a 20-6 lead. After going into the half up 17 points (34-17), it looked as if Transylvania would advance to the championship in convincing fashion, but Edgewood put together a 20-4 run to tie the game heading into the final quarter. The Eagles shot 75% (9 of 12) from the floor in the quarter.
It was the first time all season that the Pioneers have been tied with an opponent in the second half. The four 3rd quarter points was the lowest points in any quarter this season for Transylvania.
The Pioneers did not fold under the pressure and instead exploded for 24 4th quarter points while holding Edgewood to 8. Up 47-44,
Sadie Wurth scored 3 consecutive three point shots to extend the Pioneers lead back up to double digits (56-44). It shifted all momentum back to Transylvania as they would hold the Eagles to just 2 points in the final 6 minutes.
The Pioneer defense caused 19 turnovers, and scored 22 points from it.Â

Dasia Thornton led the Pioneers with 12 points each. Thornton added 14 rebounds to earn her 3rd double-double of the season.
Laken Ball scored 9 of her 11 points from three point range.
Kennedy Harris scored 8 points in the win.
With the win Transylvania now owns the 19th longest win streak in NCAA history. With a win tomorrow they will tie Hope (2005-2007) for the 18th longest win streak.
The Pioneers will face the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire tomorrow at 3 PM in the championship game.
