Our Pioneers Men's lacrosse team was on the road yet again as they traveled to Memphis Tennessee this weekend where they faced off against the Rhodes college Lynx. Today the Pioneers found themselves in less than optional conditions with a mix of wetness and the cold playing a factor in today's game. With a multitude of factors working against Transylvania in this game the Pioneers still weren't able to pick up a win on the road losing to the Lynx 4-13.
This game was a tale of two halves with Transylvania playing some great defense this half along with stable offense keeping the Lynx at bay. The game started off with quick scoring on both sides first from Rhodes followed by a senior attackman Seiver Utsey earning his first goal of the season. From then on Rhodes was able to tack on two more before the end of the 1st as we were able to rip one more with a minute to go from Sophomore Dylan Mordhorst. This was also Mordhorst's first goal of the season which came off of the work from Transy's defense.Â
The second quarter was a slower game in the scoring category as each team showed that they can play with one another gridlocking the quarter at 1 a piece. Our goal came first temporarily tying the game at 3-3 from freshman Luke Stetter. Stetter had a productive day trying to open up the net with 5 shots but ending the day with just the one goal and an assist, the assist being his first of his career. This half ended with the Pios in striking distance only down 1, 3-4.
The second half was one that got away from the Pioneers as they looked like a different team not able to make the stands as they had in the first. Rhodes was able to stack up 6 unanswered goals against us which dug Transy in a hole that they weren't able to surpass. This half however, and much of the game for that matter, was full of penalties. Rhodes totaled 9 penalties but Transy was only able to capitalize on one of those opportunities which took place in the 4th from Senior Dalton Hubbs scoring the last goal for the Pios this game. The pros here however show that Transy is getting into good positions to force calls as well as getting plenty of opportunities to shoot the ball but just not connecting. Man up will definitely be an area that is stressed for the remainder of the season.
This game does end unfavorably for the Pioneers 4-13 but Transy has a lot to take away from this game. The upcoming Pioneer schedule is an exciting one however with an early Senior Day up next as Birmingham Southern comes to Lexington March 4th at 1PM. The Pioneers will look to collect their first win of the season as a multitude of Pioneers will be honored at the game.
After the game Head Coach Logan Otto had this to say:
"Obviously not the result we wanted but we are starting to see our young talent start to make themselves known. We look forward to taking the next steps towards our game against BSC and celebrating an outstanding senior class."
