Our Pioneers played the second of a back to back in Kenosha, Wi as they faced off against Carthage College. Carthage is top ranked in the CCIW conference and nationally ranked 4th in points per game making this one of the toughest opponents the Pioneers will play this season.
The Pioneers started the 1st quarter in a zone defensively which is the first we have seen this season. This forces the opposing offense to settle for more outside shots, showing Transylvania's confidence in goalie Jackson Wilson to sustain these attempts.Â
The first quarter the Pioneers were able to score from Dalton Hubbs earning his 22nd straight game with a goal. Hubbs wouldn't finish the quarter there as he picked up an assist on Transy's second goal of the day as Dylan Mordhorst stung one before the end of the quarter.Â
The second quarter provided a lot of momentum for the Pioneers as they would start to climb back against Carthage. Carthage scored the first two of the quarter making the score 7-2, however the Pioneers would go on to score 4 goals unanswered spearheaded by Hubbs to earn his second. This was supplemented by Casey Fagan who continued his hot hand from yesterday, scoring 3 goals in a row for the Pioneers. This is Fagan's 4th game with a hat trick or more and brought the Pioneers to a close contest of 6-7.
This second half had the momentum swinging in the Pioneers favor as just a minute and a half in AJ Teague took matters into his own hands. Going almost the whole field to tie the game himself at 7-7. This is Teague's second goal of the year as he adds to his caused turnovers with 2 on the game and 2 ground balls. The Pioneers then took the advantage as Ryan Geisler earned a goal on man up, assisted by Luke Stetter. Followed by a Tai Stormont solo goal to earn a 7-0 run with a score of 9-7.Â
Alex Madson scored his first career goal yesterday against Carroll and today continued this scoring output by earning the Pioneers following goal himself, making the score 10-7. Alex Madson has shown incredible improvement throughout his time on the team and showing what a valuable asset he can become under the coaching fortitude of Logan Otto. Jackson Wilson would continue to perform his starting goalie duty's having 7 saves by the end of the third. The 3rd quarter ended after Casey Fagan added his fourth of the day to combat Carthage's run, ending the quarter 11-13 against the Pios.Â
The fourth quarter was competitive in all categories as the Firebirds and the Pioneers threw everything they had at each other as Fagan would go on to score his 5th goal of the game. Following this score, Tai Stormont would go on to score the following two goals as Transylvania would take the 14-13 advantage with a little over 3 minutes left. Carthage would go on to tie up the game and after a valiant effort from Dalton Hubbs to end the game with time winding down, the Pioneers and Carthage would move to overtime to decide the game.
Overtime would be a nail biter for the Pioneers as the zone would prove to stand strong after Wilson would end with 10 saves to allow the Pioneers an offensive opportunity. Dalton Hubbs would take the game into his own hands as he would go on to score the winning goal of the game after sniping the top right corner ending the game in a 15-14 Pioneer victory!  Â
The Pioneers will play at home April 15th at 1:00PM here in Lexington at Pat Deacon Stadium. The Pioneers will play North Central College as they look to extend their 2-0 start to convergence.Â
