The Pioneers opened the HCAC Tournament with a 9-4 win of Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology.
Connor Arnold was rock solid through seven innings and navigated some shaky defense behind
him early to allow the Pioneer offense to get rolling. Rose struck for two in the top of the first inning on
two defensive miscues by the Pioneers, but the offense was able to steal one of those back following
singles by
Calvin Schubert and
Henry Mitcham.
Rose was able to scrape across a two-out run in the top of the second, which again warranted a
response from the Pioneers in the bottom of the frame.
Austin Taylor led off with a single and was
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Bryce Dreher. After a flyout again advanced Taylor 90 feet,
Caleb Bowers delivered a two-out single of his own to score Taylor from third to make the score 3-2.
The Pioneers were able to jump out front in the bottom of the third. Schubert reached base via
hit by pitch and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. This time it was Mitcham's turn to deliver a
two-out RBI with a single up the middle to even the score at 3.
Austin Taylor's single put runners on the
corners with two outs and a double steal allowed Mitcham to cross the plate to put the Pios up 4-3.
The pivotal moment in the game came in the bottom of the fifth as Transy broke a 4-4 game
open with three runs in the inning on Rose miscues. Schubert scored on a wild pitch with the bases
loaded and two outs and an error on a
Houston Manning groundball allowed two more runs to score.
The Pioneers were able to add insurance runs in the bottom of the 8 th thanks to a
Trent Youngblood
single and a balk vaulted the Pioneers lead to 9-4.
Josh Furtado earned the save. He pitched the final two innings, while giving up no hits and
striking out five.
Coach Getsee had this to say after the game:
"Always glad to win game one of the tournament, but our work isn't done".
