For the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Pioneers traveled to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA for the second year in a row. The HCAC undefeated regular season and tournament champions were 12-4 going into the NCAA Tournament. They faced Capital University, the 10-4 OAC Champions.
The Pioneers got on the board first to take the 1-0 lead with a goal less than 45 seconds into the game by senior Mandi Rider. The Comets had some unanswered goals, but the Pioneers battled back to end the quarter. In the last minute of the first quarter, senior Vianne Koshoffer scored unassisted at the :50 mark and Rider added her second goal at :38 finishing the quarter down 3-6.
In the second quarter the Pioneers strung three goals together to cut the lead to 8-6, senior Abby Peterson added an unassisted goal at 10:29, sophomore Charlotte Green scored with an assist from Koshoffer, and Peterson added another goal in a man-down situation assisted by Rider. Junior Linley Dawson added a free position goal to stay within two.
Coming into the third quarter, the score was 10-7 in favor of the Comets. Green added two goals to chip away at the Comet lead, a free-position goal and one unassisted while in a man-down situation to make it 13-9. A quick run by Capital pulled away, but the Pioneers were able to add two more in the last few minutes of the game with one from senior Sophia Sparks at 3:40 and one more from Peterson at :34 before the 21-11 final.
The Pioneers finish the season 12-5 for another winning season for HCAC Coach of the Year Rachael Bragg.
