Transy Women's Tennis finishes season in NCAA Tournament against no. 13 Case Western

The Pioneers at Washington and Lee for NCAA Round 1
Transylvania Women's tennis traveled from Lexington, KY, to Lexington, VA to participate in the opening round of the 2023 NCAA tennis championships. Having received an automatic qualifier bid for winning the HCAC tournament this would be their third NCAA appearance in the last four seasons, with the 2020 tournament canceled due to Covid. After winning their conference tournament in mid October, the long wait to find out who they would be playing ended on Monday, May 1, at the (new this year for d3 tennis) NCAA selection show. The Pioneers were seeded sixth in their section of the draw and would go to Washington and Lee where they would face 3rd seeded Case Western, ranked 13th nationally, on Friday May 5th at 3 PM.

Case Western got off to a good start taking all three doubles points. At 1 doubles the regionally ranked powerhouse duo of LilyMcCloskey and Hannah Kassaie were too much for the also regionally ranked team of Grace Gardner and Katherine Taylor, beating them 8-2. Three doubles saw Christina Duvall and Maddy Williams fall to Anna Kan and Nina Hoog 8-1. FY Maria Hayes and fifth year Jess Burton battled hard but ultimately fell to Radha Patel and Katalina Wang 8-4.

Being up 3-0 after doubles the Spartans of Case Western carried the momentum over to singles and won at four and six singles to clinch the match 5-0, ending the Pioneers 2022-23 season. Coach Carey had this to say about the loss and the season. "First of all, I am so proud always of this team. They have achieved remarkable things.  Obviously, you want to come to the tournament and play and win competitive matches. In this case I think it was a great experience to see the level we are shooting for, and honestly, we aren't that far off. Case is a great team and I felt really good about the way we competed against them today. We had a great season that saw us beat a few teams we had never beaten and continue to have the team and individuals receive regional rankings. Also, perhaps more importantly, we say bye to Jess after just a tremendous collegiate athletic career. Her importance to this program cannot be overstated and she leaves it in a much better spot. Enormously grateful for her."

The Pios conclude their 2022-23 season 18-4 overall. They have been a fall in the past, but next year they will be having their championship portion in the spring for the first time.
