ST. LOUIS, MO- The Transylvania Women's Tennis team traveled to Washington University as they hosted the ITA Regional championships. The Pioneers would use this as a wrap up for the fall season in preparation for the spring. The full results from this weekend can be found HERE.
Grace Gardner's competition was cut short due to injury unfortunately but Katherine Taylor and Maria Hayes both had singles victories. Maria won two matches in the 'color' draw vs opponents from Hanover and Wooster. Hayes also paired with first year Ally Rassenfoss for a good run in doubles, beating Wooster 8-1 in the first round before falling to the 9 seed from host Washington University of St. Louis. The duo's solid play continued in the back draw with a nice win over Trine 8-3. Their run concluded with a very exciting and close match vs a very good Denison team which came up just short, falling 6-8.
Katherine Taylor faced a very tough 9 seed from Kenyon in the first round. Her tourney picked up steam with a good run in the back draw with two very good wins, beating Katie King from Depauw and Lillia Walter from Otterbein before falling to a very good player from John Carroll.
Head coach Bill Carey had these thoughts after the weekend:
"The ITA's are always a great trip where we get a chance to face the best players in our region, which is very strong and feature some of the best players in D3 women's tennis, from U of Chicago, Wash U, Kenyon and others. It's been really satisfying to see the improvement and growth in our program each year we come. The expectations have advanced, and at the same time our comfort level has as well, we have really moved from being happy to be there and learn and experience, to really seeing how far we can advance and that is tremendous. I'm sad that Grace's last ITA was cut short due to injury but really pleased with the play of everyone. Katherine was phenomenal and Maria and Ally did an amazing job, especially considering it was their first ITA. Really great trip all around. "
