REDLANDS, CA - Transylvania began their 2024-2025 season in the win column against Chapman University in the Redlands Tip-Off Classic. The Pioneers won the season opener on the road, 69 to 62 on Friday night. The victory also became Head Coach Hannah Varels first win as head coach of the Pioneers. Three Pioneers reached double digit points in the Pioneer victory. 

Chapman would take the first quarter, 15-12 with Riley Finn scoring 6 of the Pioneers first 12 points. Transylvania went 50% from the field in the first quarter. The second quarter would be back and forth much like the first quarter.  The Pioneers outscored Chapman 24-15 in the second quarter. Junior, Sierra Kemelgor, led the Pioneers with 8 points in the second. Transylvania finished the first half up 6 points. 

Both teams would draw in the third quarter, both scoring 13 total points. Transylvania beat Chapman in the final quarter 20-19, making the final score 69 to 62. With the win, the Pioneers began their regular season 1-0 and started their opening tournament 1-0.

Multiple players stepped up in key moments and its rewarding to see their preseason efforts paying off. Freshman Chloe McKnight gave us crucial minutes to end Chapmans run in the second half. We're excited to make some adjustments and compete against a very talented Redlands team tomorrow". 

Transylvania was led by Emilie Teall who finished with 19 points, 3 assists and 1 rebound. Teall also went 50% from 3 on 6 attempts. Senior, Sadie Wurth followed with 17 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Kemelgor finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. 

The Pioneers return to the court today at 4:00 PM against the University of Redlands in the second game of the Redlands Tip-Off Classic.
