LEXINGTON - Transylvania Baseball earned their second sweep and first conference sweep of the season after defeating Rose-Hulman in both games of the Saturday doubleheader. The Pioneers defeated the Fightin' Engineers 5-4 in game one and 16-6 in 7 innings in game two.
Game 1: Transy 5, RHIT 4
Luke Patton moved to 2-0 on the season after pitching 7 strong innings, allowing just 1 earned run and 6 hits. He held RHIT hitless through the first 5 innings. He struck out 6 batters in the win.
Matt Armstrong earned his 6th save of the season after coming in relief in the 8th inning and closing out the 9th. He struck out 2 batters and gave up just 1 hit over 2 innings.
Neither team could plate a runner through the first 5 innings. After Rose-Hulman's leadoff batter reached on an error in the top of the 6th, a double would put runners in scoring position. An RBI groundout put RHIT on the board first, and 2 singles would give the Fightin' Engineers a 3 run lead.
Transylvania would bat around the next inning and score 4 runs on 5 hits to take a 4-3 lead.
Trent Youngblood would double to center to score
Calvin Schubert to start the rally, then
Austin Taylor,
Bryce Dreher, and
Riley Hill would all bring in a run each with RBI singles.
Rose-Hulman tied the game in the top half of the 8th after grounding into a double play with bases loaded.
Transylvania would take the lead in the bottom of the 7th and hold it through the final inning. Schubert led off with a double, and would advance to third the next at bat.
Henry Mitcham brought in Schubert after Schubert beat out the throw at home plate from the third basemen, just getting underneath the tag at the plate.
Armstrong would put the Fightin' Engineers down in order in the 8th, and with 1 out in the 9th and a runner on second he'd get the next two batters to fly out to end the game.
Calvin Schubert finished 2-3.
Trent Youngblood and
Austin Taylor finished 2-4 with an RBI each.
Bryce Dreher and
Riley Hill both added RBI's in the win.
Game 2: Transy 16, RHIT 6 - 7 innings
In game two, the Pioneer bats exploded for a season high 22 hits and 16 runs. Transy scored 5 runs in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th, and 4 in the 6th to score their most runs in the HCAC matchup since last season's 16-1 win over Mount St. Joseph on April 8th.
In the win,
Trent Youngblood became the Transylvania University hit king after earning his 37th hit of the season and 219th career hit. After breaking the doubles record last weekend and triples record this yesterday, Youngblood broke the all time hits record with a two run home run over the right center field wall to make history. He passes Hudson Chastain's 218 mark set in the 2021. You can view the video

Henry Craig pitched 2 innings in relief and allowed only 1 run.
Transylvania's bats were hot all afternoon.
Austin Taylor finished 4-5 in game two and finished the week 10-13 and had 9 RBI's.
