DANVILLE, Ky- Transy Baseball is off to their best start in fourteen years at 6-1 after their 4-3 thrilling win over in-state rival Centre College on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers only had six hits in the win, but made them count.
After a scoreless first two innings, Centre took a one run lead after a hit by pitch, a balk, and an eventual RBI single to left field. The Pioneers put together a two out rally in the fourth inning, scoring three of their four runs in the game on a bases loaded walk by
Austin Taylor, and a two run single by
Walter Munday.
Centre tied the game up in the sixth inning on an RBI double and an error.
The Pioneer pitching staff was excellent on the night.
Henry Craig,
Drew Bowles, and
Matt Armstrong combined for 14 strikeouts while giving up just five hits on the night. Craig went six innings, striking out nine and giving up four hits. Bowles earned the win pitching in relief. He struck out three batters in two innings.
Matt Armstrong earned his third save of the season.
Transylvania scored the go ahead run in the ninth inning with two outs.
Trent Youngblood walked with one out, then stole second two batters later with two outs.
Austin Taylor played hero for Transy, getting his only hit of the night in the ninth for an RBI double, his second RBI of the game.
After giving up a leadoff single in the bottom half of the ninth, Armstrong retired the next three batters for the save.
At 6-1, Transylvania's start is their best since they began 5-1 in 2010. The Pioneers will look to keep it rolling this weekend when they take on Westminster College this Saturday and Sunday in a three game series. First pitch for Saturday is scheduled for noon.
