SPRINGFIELD, OHIO - Transylvania University extended their winning streak to nine, defeating Wittenberg 3-0 on Wednesday night.Â
In the first set,
Kayden Holcomb would score first for Transylvania, recording her first of nine kills (.457) on the evening. Holcomb was assisted by
Grace Ward, her first of 27 assists in the victory. Wittenberg would take an 8-7 advantage, but Transy would respond to retake the lead 13-9.
Maggie Harrison would record two consecutive aces in the run. Wittenberg would eventually rally to tie at 20-20, however the Pioneers would answer with four kills, two from
Cate Scheper and two from Holcomb, to win a competitive opening set 25-21.
In the second, Transy would run off six consecutive points to take a 12-10 lead.
Ava Beltsos would record an ace in the midst of kills from Holcomb and Scheper. The two teams would exchange short runs before Scheper's kill would end the second set for Wittenberg, Transy winning 25-20.Â
In the third and final set, Transy's offense would be on full display as they ran off to a 14-2 lead. Kills from Scheper, Atcher, Holcomb and Myers would lead the way for the early offensive display. After a brief exchange of points, Transy would find another run to take a commanding 23-8 advantage. After the run, Wittenberg would respond with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 24-14 before Transy would close things out in set three with a 25-14 win, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 victory and their ninth straight win.
As impressive as the offense was for Transylvania, the defense shined in the effort. The Pioneers recorded 63 digs, 15 coming from
Maggie Harrison. Equally impressive for the Pioneers was the double double performance from
Grace Ward, recording 12 digs in addition to her 27 assists.Â
Head Coach Amy Barmore was excited to get the road victory Wednesday, andÂ
"Tonight was our first midweek road trip and we did a great job," Barmore said. "It took us a bit to get going, but we figured out what we needed to do to stop them. Wittenberg is a good team and once we settled in, we found our groove.
Cate Scheper led us with 12 kills, hitting a .250, and Kayden followed with nine kills hitting a .457.
Maggie Harrison led us with 15 digs and
Grace Ward had a double double with 27 assists and 12 digs. We have a big weekend ahead of us that we are excited about!"
Up next for the Pioneers is the Transy Invitational, held at the Clive M. Beck Center on Friday, September 27th and Saturday, September 28th.Â
