Pioneers Fall to On the Road Centre Despite Early Lead

By Chris Bryant
Contributing Writer for Transylvania Athletics

Danville, KY – The Transylvania Pioneers dropped a 9-5 decision to Centre College on Tuesday evening in a road contest. Despite jumping out to an early lead and battling back in the middle innings, the Pioneers couldn't hold off a late rally by the Colonels.

Transylvania took an early advantage in the top of the fourth inning. After Chris Hedinger led off with a triple, Ethan Dillon drove him in along with Max Finn (who had walked) with a two-RBI triple of his own. Dillon then capitalized on a wild pitch to score, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth. B. Dreher singled, followed by a single from Baxter Tedesco. Both runners came around to score on a two-RBI single by Austin Taylor.

However, Centre mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 6-5 lead. The Colonels added three more runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory.

On the mound for the Pioneers, senior Jacob Moberly started the game, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Freshman Tristan Cooper pitched 0.2 innings, giving up two runs on one hit. Junior Camryn Warfield followed with 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three. Freshman Giancarlo Gonzalez pitched one scoreless inning, striking out one. Sophomore Brayden Offenbacher (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in 0.2 innings. Fifth Gabe Dillard pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three.

Offensively, the Pioneers saw strong performances from Ethan Dillon, who had a triple and two RBIs, and Austin Taylor, who also drove in two runs with a single. Chris Hedinger added a triple for Transylvania.
