Lexington, KY – The Transylvania Pioneers fell to a tough 14-4 defeat against the Denison University Big Red on Wednesday evening at Legends Field. Denison's offense proved too potent, scoring consistently throughout the game to secure the victory.
Denison got on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring a run. The Big Red then exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth and another four runs in the top of the fifth, building a commanding 9-1 lead.
The Pioneers scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore left fielder Chris Hedinger reached on a fielder's choice, driving in junior designated hitter Houston Manning. Transylvania added another run in the bottom of the fifth when junior shortstop Seita Shiratori grounded into a double play, allowing freshman center fielder Ethan Dillon to score.
Denison continued to add to their lead, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the eighth. Transylvania managed to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Sophomore left fielder Chris Hedinger hit an inside-the-park home run, and freshman catcher Trevor Watkins followed with a triple, driving in freshman right fielder Max Finn. However, Denison tacked on a final run in the top of the ninth, sealing the 14-4 victory.
Offensively for Transylvania, sophomore left fielder Chris Hedinger had a home run and an RBI. Freshman catcher Trevor Watkins contributed with a triple and an RBI. Junior designated hitter Houston Manning and senior second baseman Henry Mitcham each had a hit. Freshman third baseman Baxter Tedesco also had a hit.
The Pioneers used a number of pitchers in the contest. Fifth-year senior Matt Armstrong started, followed by sophomore Gabe Dillard, sophomore Henry Craig, senior Jacob Moberly, junior Kemper Dotson, freshman Brady McFarland, freshman Cole Mischel, sophomore Nathan Hale, sophomore Camryn Warfield, sophomore Brayden Offenbacher, and freshman Giancarlo Gonzalez. Sophomore Henry Craig (1-5) was credited with the loss.
P. Lemke earned the win for Denison. The Pioneers will look to bounce back in their next contest.
Looking Ahead: Pioneers Travel to Franklin College for HCAC Doubleheader
The Transylvania Pioneers will be on the road for their next contests, traveling to Franklin, IN, for an HCAC doubleheader against the Franklin College Grizzlies on Saturday, April 12th. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM, followed by the second game at approximately 3:00 PM. The Pioneers will aim to continue their conference play with a strong showing against the Grizzlies.
