BEREA, KY — Transylvania earned its tenth HCAC victory of the season on Wednesday evening, using a balanced offensive effort and key defensive stops to defeat Berea 66–58 inside the Seabury Center.
The Pioneers overcame a slow start after trailing 7–0 early, responding with back-to-back baskets from
Chloe McKnight and a three from
Grace Bruner to settle the offense. A strong defensive stretch allowed Transylvania to chip away, and free throws from
Riley Flinn helped the Pioneers tie the game at 10–10 late in the first quarter. Berea held an 18–14 lead after the opening frame, but Transylvania quickly shifted momentum in the second. McKnight connected on a jumper, Grinter buried a go-ahead three at the 4:37 mark, and steady inside scoring from McKnight and Bruner helped the Pioneers take a 32–28 advantage into halftime.
Transylvania extended its lead throughout the third quarter as
Raegan Barrett scored in transition and Flinn added two free throws to make it an eight-point game. Bruner continued her efficient night, knocking down a corner three, while McKnight and
Sierra Kemelgor added baskets inside to widen the margin to double digits at 47–37. The Pioneers kept control late in the quarter, using scores from Kemelgor, Barrett, and Hall to carry a 51–41 lead into the fourth.
Berea opened the final period with a brief push, but Transylvania countered with a timely three from Flinn at the 7:04 mark and a fast-break finish by Grinter to restore a double-digit cushion. Each time Berea threatened, the Pioneers answered, and a late layup from McKnight helped seal the win as Transylvania closed out the game with steady half-court execution.
McKnight led the Pioneers with 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting, while Bruner added 12 points and six rebounds. Flinn delivered 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with three steals, and Grinter matched her with 11 points and three steals of her own. Barrett scored 10 points, and Kemelgor contributed six points and four rebounds.
Transylvania improves to 15–4 overall and 10–2 in HCAC play and will travel to Terre Haute on Saturday for a conference matchup against Rose-Hulman.
