NASHVILLE, TENN. — Transylvania controlled play from start to finish on Saturday afternoon, defeating Illinois Tech 10–4 to improve to 2–1 on the season.
The Pioneers outshot Illinois Tech 64–20 and held a 38–11 advantage in shots on goal while also edging the Scarlet Hawks 35–34 in ground balls. Transylvania's defense limited Illinois Tech to just two goals over the final three quarters.
Samuel Archer and Charlie Horner each scored two goals to lead the offense, with Horner adding a game-high three assists. Huck Campbell, Andrew Welch, Jack Miller, RJ Young, Alex Vennari, and Jaxon Eldridge each found the back of the net in the balanced scoring effort.
Transylvania opened the game with first-quarter goals from Miller and Welch to take a 2–0 lead. After Illinois Tech tied the contest early in the second quarter, the Pioneers responded with a 3–0 run, highlighted by goals from Horner, Young, and Campbell, to take a 5–2 advantage into halftime.
Horner added his second goal early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 6–2, and Transylvania carried that four-goal margin into the final period. Archer scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a late tally to push the lead to 9–4, before Vennari added the final goal with just over a minute remaining.
Nick DeGrandi earned the win in goal, playing all 60 minutes and recording seven saves while allowing four goals.
Transylvania finished 25-of-28 on clears and went 1-of-6 on extra-man opportunities.
The Pioneers return to action next week as non-conference play continues.
